SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Junior Mikela Olsen homered from both sides of the plate and finished with a game-high four RBIs to lead the Sacramento State baseball team to a 9-3 victory over UC Davis Tuesday afternoon at Hornet Field.Olsen, who now has a team-best five home runs this season, homered from the left side of the plate as part of a five-run fourth and added a two-run homer from the right side of the plate in the sixth inning. With the victory, the Hornets snapped a three-game losing streak while improving to 9-9. UC Davis lost for the fourth time in the last six games while dropping to 12-9.
The Hornets tallied nine runs and 12 hits off four UC Davis pitchers as all but two Hornet starters finished the game with at least one hit. Sophomore Matt Wilson, who went 3-for-4 with two runs and two RBIs, put the Hornets on the board in the second inning with a two-run homer. Sacramento State added five runs in the fourth on a Corey Watts RBI-single, an Everet Rincon RBI-double, a Cliff Hinkle sacrifice fly and the two-run homer from Olsen.
The Hornets, who chased UC Davis starter Andrew Kloos in the fourth inning, added their final two runs in the sixth on Olsen''s blast. Two of the three UC Davis runs in the contest came on solo home runs from Ryan Coultas and Matt Kamigawachi. Kloos (0-2) picked up the loss, allowing four runs and five hits in three innings of work.
Sacramento State''s Marshall Plouffe (3-1) picked up the win, allowing just three hits and two runs (one earned) in six innings. Senior Chris Kinsey, who finished with two hits, pitched the final three innings of the contest to pick up his first save of the season. The two pitchers combined to allow just five hits while facing six batters over the minimum. Plouffe''s three victories are the most by a Hornet this season.
Sacramento State senior Tim Reimer finished with a career-high three stolen bases and now leads the team with nine this season.
The Hornets continue their eight-game homestand this Saturday, March 15, with a doubleheader against Dartmouth at 11 a.m. The team plays on five-consecutive days starting on Saturday and continuing through Sunday (vs. Dartmouth), Monday (vs. Dartmouth), Tuesday (vs. Minnesota) and Wednesday (vs. Minnesota).
