BASEBALL WINS SERIES WITH A 7-5 WIN OVER LA TECH

3/4/2007

RUSTON, La. — Gabe Jacobo and Ryan Blair each had three hits to help lead the Sacramento State baseball team to a 7-5 win over Louisiana Tech, Sunday afternoon at JC Love Field. The win clinched the three-game series for the Hornets who also won on Friday.

Sacramento State improved to 4-11 overall and 2-1 in Western Athletic Conference play. The Bulldogs fell to 13-8 overall and 1-2 in league games.

The Hornets never trailed in the contest after scoring one run in the first inning on an RBI double from Jacobo which scored Travis Kirkman. La Tech tied the game in the bottom half of the inning when Brian Rike stole home. Rike had originally reached on an error. He then stole second and went to third on another throwing error.

Sacramento State retook the lead in the third inning with a pair of runs on just one hit. Blair led off with a single up the middle but was later picked off. Jacobo followed with a walk, Montana Dye was hit by a pitch and both moved up a base on a wild pitch. Devin Spurling was intentionally walked to load the bases which led to fielder choice by David Flores in which Jacobo was retired at the plate. The Hornets finally scored on a wild pitch and added a second run on an error by first baseman Albie Goulder.

The team tacked on a fourth run in the top half of the fourth inning on a single from Blair which plated Patrick Cummins. Jacobo made the score, 5-1, in the top of the sixth inning with a single through the left side to score Kirkman.

The Bulldogs began their comeback with a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth. Rike singled to right and moved to second on a balk. An infield single placed runners on the corners and Rike later scored on a fielders choice. Following a walk, junior Mitch Lively came on in relief of starter Mick Joyce with two outs in the inning. Lively, however, allowed a single to Kevin Winn which drove in a run before closing out the frame.

Rike, who finished 2-fof-4 with three runs, cut the score to 5-4 with a solo home run in the seventh inning.

Sacramento State picked up some much needed insurance in the ninth behind a leadoff single from Jacobo. A wild pitch moved him to second and he eventually scored on an error by the shortstop. David Flores drove in the final Hornet run of the game with a single to left to give the team a 7-4 lead.

Lively remained on the hill in the ninth inning and surrendered a leadoff home run to Matt Combs. Jericho Jones added a single to center before Rike grounded into a fielder’s choice to retire Jones. Lively then got Drew Bunting to fly out to left but walked Brandon Hudson to put runners on first and second. A single from Dennis Winn loaded the bases but Adam Cobb struck out swinging for the final out.

Senior Mick Joyce (1-2) picked up his first win of the season after throwing 5.2 innings and allowing three earned runs with six strikeouts. Lively threw the final 3.1 innings to earn his second save of the series and third of the year.

Starter Dylan Mosely was saddled with the loss to drop to 2-3.

Jacobo finished the day 3-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored. Blair also had three hits in his five at-bats and drove in a run. Cummins and Flores also added a pair of hits.

Sacramento State will next play a three-game series against UC Davis beginning on Friday, March 9. The Friday and Sunday games will be played at Hornet Field while the Saturday contest will take place in Davis.
