SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Junior Mikela Olsen finished with three hits and three RBI while senior Steve Cuckovich pitched five innings of shut out ball to lead the Sacramento State baseball team to a 9-5 win over Cal State Stanislaus, Saturday afternoon at Hornet Field. The Hornets raised their record to 4-1 overall while the Warriors dropped to 3-2-1. It is the program’s best start to a season since the 1991 squad opened with a 6-1 mark.In the first inning, senior Tim Reimer led off with a single to short and then stole second. Junior John Acha gave the Hornets the lead with an RBI single to right field. After junior Chris Kinsey struck out swinging, Olsen hit a towering two-run home run to right field to make it 3-0.
The Hornets added another run in the third when Kinsey hit an RBI double to right center after Acha grounded to third and reached second on a throwing error by Andrew Yaffee.
Cal State Stanislaus made it 4-1 in the top of the sixth when Hector Alaniz drove in Jeffrey Bellotti from third with a base hit to right field. Bellotti began the inning with a single to left field off of Hornet freshman Shannon Kahale and advanced to second on a balk. Bellotti would reach third after Kyle Dennis grounded to short.
Sacramento State exploded for three runs in the bottom of the inning after Olsen scored on groudout by junior Bobby Ciani and junior Cliff Hinkle hit a two-run double to left center. Olsen and junior Jesse Schmidt opened the inning with consecutive single before sophomore Bret LeVier grounded into a double play, advancing Olsen to third. Ciani hit a grounder to short for the RBI but was safe on the play after a throwing error by Bellotti. Sophomore Matt Wilson hit a slow roller to third for a base hit and both runners moved to second and third on a wild pitch by Scott Geissler. Hinkle then cleared the bases with his drive to left center to make it a 7-1 contest.
The Warriors cut the lead to 7-3 in the top of the seventh when Scott Neal scored on an RBI groundout by John Abdelderim and Cody Crossman hit an RBI single to center field. Neal and Tucker Vazquez led off the inning with back-to-back singles. Neal scored from third on a fielder’s choice to third but Ciani’s throwing error to second allowed Vasquez and Abdelkerim to be safe on the play. On the next play, Yaffee lined out to right field and Schmidt picked off Abdelkerim at first for the double play. After Bellotti single to center, Crossman knocked in Vasquez from third with his base hit.
The Hornets made the score 9-3 after an RBI singles by Olsen in the seventh and Acha in the eighth. Cal State Stanislaus would score two more runs in the ninth on an RBI double by Bellotti and a throwing error by LeVier to make the game close.
Cuckovich raised his record to 2-0 after allowing only one hit with one walk and six strikeouts in five innings of work. The Sacramento native now leads the squad with 14 strikeouts while lowering his ERA to 0.90. Freshman Shannon Kahale and James Wheeler pitched a combined four innings of relief in their first collegiate appearances.
Olsen went 3-for-4 with two runs and three RBI to lead the Hornet offense. Acha also chipped in with a 2-for-4 performance with a team high three runs and two RBI. Schmidt rounded out the Hornets with multiple hits on the afternoon (2-for 4).
Sacramento State will complete its two-game series with Cal State Stanislaus on Sunday, Feb. 9, at 1 p.m. at Hornet Field.
