MORAGA, Calif. - Nick Conte scored the go-ahead run in the sixth inning as Saint Mary’s defeated the Sacramento State the Sacramento State baseball team, 3-2, in the Gaels’ home opener, Thursday afternoon at Louis Guisto Field. The Hornets suffered their first loss of the season and are now 3-1 overall while the Gaels increased their record to 1-3.After senior Tim Reimer recorded a double to open the game, junior John Acha got the Hornets on the board first with an RBI double. Acha scored on an errant throw to third base to give the Hornets a 2-0 advantage.
In the bottom of the fourth inning, the Gaels cut the lead in half after a pair of hits by Tim Spooner and Bryan Byrne set up an RBI single to left by Conte.
In the fifth inning, pitcher Dane Dobrinich ended a Hornet threat by striking out two batters with runners in scoring position. Mike Sansoe then led-off the bottom of the fifth with a triple. Gilbert Gil then scored Sansoe on a single to tie the score at 2-2.
The Gaels would take their first lead of the game in the bottom of the sixth inning when Gil''s slow roller to thirdbase scored Conte on a fielder’s choice. Gil had reached base on a fielder’s choice earlier in the inning and was advanced to third after consecutive singles by Adam Bellows and Sansoe.
Dobrinich recorded the win by allowing no runs while scattering four hits in 4.1 innings of work. Matt Yourkin faced one batter in the ninth to earn his first save of the year.
Acha led the Sacramento State offense by going 4-for-5 with a run and an RBI. Junior Mikela Olsen and sophomore Bret LeVier were the only other Hornets to record multiple hits.
Sacramento State will next host Cal State Stanislaus on Saturday, Feb. 8, at 1 p.m. at Hornet Field. The Hornets will complete their two-game home series with the Warriors on Sunday, Feb. 9, at 1 p.m.
