LATE HEROICS GIVES BASEBALL A 5-4 WIN OVER PACIFIC

2/4/2003

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Junior Mikela Olsen’s RBI single in the ninth inning gave the Sacramento State baseball team a 5-4 win over Pacific, Tuesday afternoon at Hornet Field. The game marked the first regular season contest in newly renovated Hornet Field. Sacramento State is now 3-0 on the season while Pacific’s record dropped to 2-2. The Hornets have now opened a season with three-consecutive wins for the first time since 1991. During that season, Sacramento State went 4-0.

Junior Jesse Schmidt gave the Hornets an early 1-0 lead in the first inning with an RBI single to left field that drove in junior John Acha from second.

Sacramento State pushed its lead to 3-0 in the fifth when Olsen drove in Kinsey from second with a single to centerfield and Schmidt scored on a wild pitch by Sergio Silva.

Pacific scored its first run in the seventh when Octavio Amezquita drove in Jesse Kovacs with an RBI grounder to short that was bobbled by Acha for an error. After the error, both Tiger runners advanced to second and third on a balk by senior Steve Correa and Evan Bishop reached on an error by freshman Brian Blauser to load the bases with two outs. Correa ended the threat by forcing Aaron Harper to groundout to third.

The Hornets pushed the lead to 4-1 in the bottom of the seventh when Acha scored on a wild pitch by Silva. Acha had led off the inning with a double to right field and moved to third on an error by Silva.

The Tigers evened the score in the eighth when Kovacs hit a sacrifice fly to center and Nicholas Sekiya drove in two runs with a triple down the right field line. Correa started the inning but was replaced by Andy Mohr after hitting Chase Headley to lead off the inning and allowing a base hit by Nathan McCall. Mohr allowed a single to Josh Snook to load the bases before Kovacs hit the sacrifice fly. Mohr then got James Stanford to pop out to short but Sekiya emptied the bases with his triple. With a man on third, Cory Lake ground back to Mohr to end the inning.

After Renecke Stelzride shut down the Tigers in the ninth, Kinsey opened the Hornets at bat in the bottom of the inning with a strikeout. The next batter, Schmidt walked on a full count and stole second to put himself in position to score. On a 2-0 count, Olsen drove a ground ball through the hole in right field. Sekiya picked up the ball cleanly and threw a strike to home plate. Schmidt was beaten by the throw but managed to tuck his left arm in and around the tag by Nathan McCall for the win.

Kinsey, who started in his first game of the season, got the no decision after allowing no runs on four hits with one walk and 12 strikeouts in six innings of work. The Elk Grove, Calif., native became the third person in program history to record 12 strikeouts in a single game and was one shy of the school record set by Mike Eby in 1995.

Stelzride earned his second win of the season after allowing one hit in an inning of work. Acha, Schmidt and Olsen were the only Hornets to record multiple hits. Olsen also led the squad with two RBI.

The Hornets will next travel to Saint Mary’s on Thursday, Feb. 6, at 2 p.m. to face the Gaels in Louis Guisto Field. Sacramento State will end its weekend with single games against Cal State Stanislaus on Saturday-Sunday, Feb. 8-9, at Hornet Field. Both games will begin at 1 p.m.
