SAINT MARY’S COMES FROM BEHIND TO DEFEAT BASEBALL IN SECOND DAY OF RIVER CITY CLASSIC

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - For the second straight day, Sacramento State suffered a defeat at the fourth-annual River City Classic, falling 14-4 to Saint Mary’s on Saturday afternoon at Hornet Field.
The game was the second of the day for the Gaels (9-8), who in the morning posted a 4-1 upset of defending College World Series champion and ninth-ranked Oregon State (10-2).
Sacramento State (2-9) had an early 3-0 lead after two innings, but Saint Mary’s responded with 10 unanswered runs, including a seven-run sixth.
The Gaels had 18 hits in the game and were walked seven times. Of those 18 hits, nine were for extra bases and four were home runs.
Third baseman J.P. Musgrove led Saint Mary’s with a 4-for-4 performance and four RBIs, including his first home run of the year. Joel Staples finished the game 2-for-6 with three RBIs, and two runs scored including his second home run this season. Leadoff hitter and starting rightfielder Eric Cattoni was 3-for-5 with one RBI, four runs scored, a double and stolen base.
Sacramento State starter Trevor York took the loss after allowing six runs on nine hits in five innings of work.
Saint Mary’s starter Brandon Berl surrendered Sacramento State’s first three runs, and was replaced by Scott Schneider (2-1). The 5-foot-11 right-hander pitched 4.2 innings and held the Hornets to one run on five hits in the win. Sacramento State also left 15 base runners on during the game.
Sacramento State was led by junior Jeff Hannah’s 3-for-5 performance. The Visalia, Calif., native hit his third double of the year and in the sixth produced a one-run single. Freshman first baseman Gabe Jacobo was 2-for-5 along with freshman Tim Wheeler, who hit his first career triple in the second.
Senior and leadoff hitter Patrick Cummins was 1-for-3 on the day with two runs scored, one walk and one sacrifice, while junior third baseman David Flores was walked three times, hit by a pitch and also stole his second base of the year.
Hornet Field will host two more games on Sunday in the final day of the River City Classic. Saint Mary’s and San Francisco will play the morning game at 10 a.m., while the Hornets and the defending CWS champs, Oregon State, are scheduled for a 2 p.m. start.
