SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Sophomore Chris Kinsey and freshman Bret LeVier each homered twice in Sacramento State’s doubleheader sweep over Centenary Saturday afternoon at Hornet Field. The Hornets won the first game, 5-3, when Kinsey hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the 10th inning. The team led throughout the second game and won, 12-5.The pair of wins extends Sacramento State’s winning streak to a season-long three games. The Hornets are now 6-3 and have won four of their last five games. Centenary fell to 4-9.
In the first game, Sacramento State scored a run in the bottom of the first inning but allowed the Gents to score twice in the third to take a 2-1 lead. The Hornets tied the game in the fourth inning on a ground out by LeVier which scored Mario Celillo. The team moved ahead in the sixth inning when LeVier hit his first collegiate home run over the left field fence.
Sacramento State appeared to have the game in control heading into the eighth inning. However, Seth Winterer drew a leadoff walk and moved to second on a ground out. Winterer then advanced to third on a deep fly ball by Ryan Green before scoring on a wild pitch. Neither team was able to score in the ninth inning forcing the game into extra innings.
After Hornet starter Kevin Marzion retired the Gents in order in the top of the 10th, Ryan Brown was hit by a pitch to start the Sacramento State inning. Kinsey ended the game with a home run to straightaway center field on a 2-2 pitch. The homer was Kinsey’s fourth of the season and his second walk-off home run in the last five games.
Marzion threw all 10 innings to earn his first win of the season. The senior allowed just one earned run and struck out four. Tyler Robertson, who entered the game in the 10th, took the loss for Centenary.
The Hornets continued their momentum in the second game as the team scored two runs in the first inning and four in the second. Helping Sacramento State in the second innings were a pair of Gent errors, a wild pitch and a passed ball.
Centenary cut the lead to 4-2 in the fourth inning but Kinsey hit a three-run home run in the bottom of the fourth to extend the Hornet lead. Sacramento State concluded its scoring with three runs in the fifth including a two-run HR by LeVier.
