FRESNO, Calif. – The Sacramento State baseball team scored four runs in the ninth inning but it wasn't enough to overcome a big deficit and the Hornets lost, 10-6, to Fresno State on Saturday night in a Western Athletic Conference game at Beiden Field.
The Hornets (25-22, 8-6 WAC) scored six runs on 12 hits with two errors while the Bulldogs tallied 10 runs on 14 hits with one error.
Sacramento State had an early 1-0 lead until Fresno State scored three in the fifth, two more in the sixth and five in the eighth. All five Bulldog runs in eighth, however, were unearned.
The Hornets, which entered the weekend series with the top rated defense in the nation, had an error in the fifth and another costly miscue in Fresno’s big eighth inning.
Sacramento State, down 10-2 entering the ninth, tried to make a run late but even sophomore Justin Higley’s three-run homer to right, his second of the season, wasn’t enough to pull his team back into the game.
Junior Clay Cederquist, who played at Fresno State as a freshman before transferring to Fresno City College, went 3-for-4 against his former team while Higley, junior Andrew Ayers and freshman Rhys Hoskins each had two hits.
Freshman starting pitcher Brennan Leitao (5-4) took the loss after allowing five runs on 11 hits in six innings with two walks and one strikeout. Fresno State’s Justin Haley (6-3) earned the win after giving up just two runs on nine hits in 7.1 innings with one walk and eight strikeouts.
The Hornets and Bulldogs meet in the rubber match of the series at 1 p.m. tomorrow.
