Freshman Kyle Moses drove in the Hornets' only run in a loss to USF.
SACRAMENTO, Calif. – The Sacramento State baseball team dropped a midweek non-conference game to San Francisco, 10-1, on Tuesday afternoon at John Smith Field.
San Francisco's win avenges a home loss earlier this season to the Hornets, 3-1, on March 28.
The Hornets (24-21) tallied one run on eight hits with two errors. Sacramento State has not be shutout all season. The Dons tallied 10 runs on 17 hits with no errors as they scored early and often on Tuesday.
Among San Francisco’s 17 hits were two home runs. First baseman Nik Balog crushed a 3-1 pitch over the fence in right center for a three-run homer in the first inning while designated hitter Matt Chavez hit a two-run bomb off the parking garage beyond the left field wall.
The Dons scored at least one run in all but three innings and they tacked on two or more runs in three frames.
Sacramento State starting pitcher Tanner Mendonca (5-6) took the loss after allowing three runs on one hit, one walk and three hit-by-pitches in the first inning. San Francisco starter Christian Cecilio (2-5) earned the win after throwing three scoreless innings with three hits and three strikeouts.
San Francisco’s seven pitchers combined for 12 strikeouts, including nine swinging by the Hornets.
Freshman Kyle Moses drove in the Hornets’ only run with an RBI triple in the sixth inning. Freshman Scotty Burcham and sophomore Justin Higley each went 2-for-4.
The Hornets are on the road this weekend in a Western Athletic Conference series at Fresno State.
