SAN JOSE, Calif. – The Sacramento State baseball team won its third league series of the season with an 8-3 win at San Jose State in a Western Athletic Conference game on Saturday at Municipal Stadium.
Head coach Reggie Christiansen’s squad will be looking for a sweep with game three scheduled for 1 p.m. tomorrow.
The Hornets (24-19, 7-4 WAC) have now won three of their first four WAC series this season after scoring eight runs on 14 hits with one error on Saturday. Sacramento State opened up WAC play by taking two-of-three at Louisiana Tech before winning one of three games at home against No. 25 New Mexico State. Since that series loss, the Hornets have taken two-of-three from Nevada and the first two games at San Jose State.
The Spartans (19-19, 4-4 WAC) tallied three runs on seven hits with no errors. San Jose State entered the weekend tied with Hawai’i for second in the WAC standings but have slid to fifth. The Hornets were tied for fourth but, with back-to-back wins, have climbed to second, behind only MNSU.
Freshman starting pitcher Brennan Leitao (5-3) won his second straight start after giving up three runs on seven hits in six innings with three strikeouts and one walk. Freshman Rhys Hoskins hit his team-best ninth home run of the season with a two-run shot in the seventh inning. Sophomore Will Soto also homered in the third inning, his second of the year.
Senior Derrick Chung continued his torrid pace in WAC play as he went 4-for-5 with two runs and a RBI. Chung is now hitting .405 through 11 conference games.
Esteban Guzman (1-1) took the loss for the Spartans after allowing four runs on eight hits in five innings with two strikeouts and two walks. Reliever David Wayne Russo also surrendered four runs.
The Hornets have won 10 of their last 13 games and seven of their last eight.
