SAN JOSE, Calif. – The sixth inning proved to be magical for the Hornets once again, as the Sacramento State baseball team scored three runs in the frame to take the lead against San Jose State en route to a 7-2 victory on Friday night in a Western Athletic Conference game at Municipal Stadium.

Head coach Reggie Christiansen’s squad improved to 20-0 on the season when leading after the sixth inning. The Hornets have been trailing in four of their last seven games before rallying in the sixth inning.

Sacramento State (23-19, 6-4 WAC) scored seven runs on 10 hits with no errors. Sophomore RHP Dallas Chadwick (4-1), the reigning WAC pitcher of the week, earned the win after throwing a complete game with two runs allowed on seven hits with three walks and two strikeouts. The Hornets have won nine of their last 12 games.

San Jose State (19-18, 4-3 WAC) tallied two runs on seven hits. Reliever Mike Aldrete (5-1), took his first loss of the year after giving up three runs on three hits in 0.2 innings with two walks.

The Spartans scored single runs in both the first and second innings to take an early lead but the Hornets used the sixth inning to once again take the lead for good.

Junior Andrew Ayers led off the sixth inning with a single to left and, following an out, moved to second after freshman Rhys Hoskins earned a six-pitch walk. Senior Trevor Paine was hit by a pitch to load the bases for sophomore David Del Grande. Del Grande smacked a single down the left field line to score both Ayers and Hoskins. Sophomore Will Soto followed with another single to load the bases again. SJSU recorded the second out of the inning before Aldrete walked freshman Scotty Burcham on four pitches to score the third and final run of the inning.

With a one run lead, the Hornets were not done. Sacramento State scored four runs on four hits in the eighth inning, including a leadoff home run by Paine – his first of the season – and a two-RBI double from sophomore Justin Higley. Chadwick got stronger as the game went on as he faced four batters or less in each of the last four innings.

With a game one win in the books, the Hornets and Spartans will continue the three-game series on Saturday at 1 p.m. The series finale is at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
