Starter Tanner Mendonca was strong but the Wolf Pack got to the Hornets' bullpen late.
SACRAMENTO, Calif. – After taking the first two games of a three-game set with Nevada, the Sacramento State baseball team was looking for a sweep on Sunday but lost, 9-1, to the Wolf Pack in a Western Athletic Conference game at John Smith Field.
The Hornets (22-19, 5-4 WAC) scored just one run on 11 hits with no errors. Sacramento State stranded nine base runners. The Wolf Pack (21-18, 5-4 WAC) scored nine runs on 13 hits with no errors.
Both starting pitchers were strong early, as Sacramento State
Tanner Mendonca and Nevada’s Tom Jameson did not allow a run through the first five frames.
The Wolf Pack, however, broke through in a big way by scoring at least two runs in each of the final four innings. The Hornets did not get on the board until freshman
Kasey Chapan’s ground ball RBI in the ninth.
Mendonca (5-5) took the loss after giving up two runs on five hits in six innings with two strikeouts and four walks. Tom Jameson (5-1) earned the victory after surrendering one run on 11 hits in eight innings with three strikeouts and one walk. He allowed
Hunter Adrian’s double to leadoff the ninth before being pulled for reliever Matt Gardner.
The Hornets had at least one hit in all but two innings, including three in the third inning, but scored just once. Nevada turned two double plays behind Jameson to help him get out of jams.
The Nevada offense was fueled by Kewby Meyer and Brooks Klein, who both homered. Brooks went 3-for-5 with three RBIs and two runs scored.
Sacramento State senior catcher
Derrick Chung lost his 14-game hitting streak on Sunday as he went 0-for-4. Freshman
Rhys Hoskins continued his team-best 24-game on-base streak with a single and a walk versus the Wolf Pack.
The Hornets are at San Jose State this weekend for a three-game series. The Spartans (19-16, 4-2 WAC) swept Fresno State last week but dropped 2-of-3 versus Hawai’i this weekend.
