BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - The Sacramento State baseball team dropped the second game of a three-game series, 11-4, on Saturday night against CSU Bakersfield at Hardt Field.
The Hornets (14-14) tallied four runs on eight hits with two errors while the Roadrunners (10-15) accumulated 11 runs on 15 hits with four errors.
Sacramento State led 3-1 entering the bottom of the fifth inning when the Roadrunners exploded for five runs. They tacked on three more in the seventh and two additional runs in the eighth inning to pull away from the Hornets.
Freshman starting pitcher Brennan Leitao (2-2) took the loss for the Hornets after giving up six runs (two earned) on eight hits in five innings. Sacramento State relievers Tyler Hoelzen, Daniel Kopas and Brandon Creel were tagged for five runs on seven hits in the final three innings.
CSU Bakersfield starter Scott Brattvet earned the win after surrendering four runs (two earned) on eight hits in seven innings. Carter Hayden pitched two hitless innings in relief.
Stuart Smith hit a home run for the Roadrunners while Tyler Shyock led his team with three RBIs. Four other players also had RBIs for CSU Bakersfield on Saturday night.
The Hornets were paced offensively by junior first baseman Clay Cederquist, who went 2-for-4 with an RBI on Saturday night. Freshman shortstop Scotty Burcham also had an RBI.
The Hornets and Roadrunners meet in the rubber match of the three-game series tomorrow at 1 p.m.
