HOSKINS' SIXTH HOME RUN OF THE SEASON LEADS BASEBALL PAST SAN FRANCISCO, 3-1

3/28/2012

Hoskins
Rhys Hoskins pulled out his home run trot after a two-run blast in the sixth inning at USF.

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. -
Freshman Rhys Hoskins hit his team-best sixth home run of the season while six pitchers limited the Dons to just three hits and the Sacramento State baseball team defeated San Francisco, 3-1, on Thursday afternoon at Benedetti Diamond.

The Hornets (13-13) scored three runs on 10 hits with one error. The Dons (13-14) tallied one run on just three hits with no errors.

In a game that featured 16 pitchers – 10 for USF, six for Sacramento State – neither teams' offense could get into much of a rhythm.

The Dons took a 1-0 lead after shortstop Aritz Garcia’s sacrifice fly in the fourth. The Hornets had five hits through the first five innings but nothing to show for it until Hoskins stepped to the plate in the sixth. The Jesuit HS graduate put a charge into a 1-0 pitch which sailed over the left field fence. Hoskins’ team-best sixth home run of the season gave the Hornets a 2-1 lead. Clay Cederquist smacked a pinch hit single to right to tack on an insurance run in the ninth but it wasn’t needed as the Sacramento State pitching staff was on point.

Hornets’ starting pitcher Zach Morgan allowed two hits in 2.1 innings but relievers Tyler HoelzenBrandon CreelDaniel KopasHunter Greenwood and R.J. Davis gave up just one more hit over the last 6.2 innings to slam door on the Dons.

Kopas (1-0) earned his first collegiate victory while Davis pitched a perfect 1-2-3 ninth for his team-leading fourth save. The senior closer has surrendered just three runs on six hits in 13 innings this season. San Francisco reliever Jordan Haseltine (0-1) took the loss.

Sacramento State has tomorrow off before starting a three-game set at CSU Bakersfield on Friday. The Hornets will throw RHPs Tanner MendoncaTy Nichols and Brennan Leitao in the series. The Roadrunners are 8-14 this season.
