SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Senior catcher Derrick Chung went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and a game-high three RBIs and the Sacramento State baseball team defeated Seattle U, 9-6, on Friday afternoon in the first of a three-game series at John Smith Field.

In a game that featured 26 combined hits and 15 total runs, the Hornets (2-3) used six pitchers. The Redhawks (3-2) used five players on the mound but it was the 11 men they left on basepaths that hurt.

Sacramento State started off the game strong, as head coach Reggie Christensen's squad scored at least one run in each of the first three innings and led 5-2 at the end of three. But Seattle U tied up the game, 5-5, with a run in the fourth and two more in the fifth.

In the sixth, Trevor Paine led off with a single up the middle and he came all the way around to score on Andrew Ayers' double down the left field line. The Hornets struck for three more runs in the seventh to put away the game.

Kyle Moses drew a walk to lead off the seventh and went to second on Justin Higley's single through the right side. Chung tallied on of his three RBIs with a single in the next at-bat, which scored Moses. The Redhawks recorded two outs, but with Chung on second and Higley on third, Will Soto smashed a double off the bottom of the wall in right to drive in two runs. The Hornets gave up a single run in the eighth, but senior transfer R.J. Davis entered in the ninth and shut the door to tally his first career save in Green and Gold.

Sophomore Dallas Chadwick recorded the win after throwing two innings of scoreless relief. Seattle U reliever Grant Gunning took the loss after giving up one run on three hits in three innings. Neither starter - Hunter Greenwood for the Hornets and Seafth Howe for the Redhawks - last more than three innings.

The Hornets are back in action at 1 p.m. tomorrow at John Smith Field while Sunday's game has been moved up to an 11:30 a.m. first pitch.
