SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Saint Mary's scored all of its runs over two innings and the Sacramento State baseball team lost, 7-2, to the Gaels on Monday afternoon at John Smith Field.

The Hornets (1-3) tallied nine hits and took three walks but left 11 men on base while the Gaels (4-0) scored seven runs on 10 hits and four walks.

Sacramento State pitchers recorded three three-and-outs and kept the Gaels off the board in seven innings but Saint Mary's was able to score in bunches in the fourth and sixth.

The Gaels hit three straight singles to load the bases in the fourth before first baseman Troy Channing doubled to deep right center and drove in two runs. Another run scored on a an error and Channing eventually came in on a single. In the sixth inning, it was Channing once again that doubled to drive in a run. A single up the middle by second baseman Chris Murphy drove in two more runs and the Gaels' pitching staff had more than enough support.

Saint Mary's starting pitcher Ben Griset earned the win after allowing just one run on four hits in seven innings with seven strikeouts and three walks. Reliever Ryan Brockett allowed one run on five hits in two innings.

For the Hornets, freshman Rhys Hoskins drove in a run with a single to center in the eighth while fellow freshman Kyle Moses singled in a run in the fourth. Moses tallied three hits for the second consecutive game and the leadoff man is hitting .533 in his first 15 collegiate at-bats.

Sacramento State starting pitcher Ty Nichols took the loss after giving up four runs on six hits in 3.2 innings. Reliever Tyler Hoelzen was a bright spot for the Hornets' bullpen, striking out three batters while facing just four. Hunter Adrian and R.J. Davis also each threw hitless innings in relief.

The Hornets used seven pitchers with six making their first appearance of the season and three making their collegiate debuts (Nichols, Hoelzen and Garrett Kraemer).

The Hornets continue their season-opening seven game homestand with a three-game set against Seattle starting at 2 p.m. on Friday.
