FRESNO, Calif. --- Casey Fuller was 4-for-5 with a home run and Ryan Brown added three hits to help lead the Sacramento State baseball team to an 8-5 win over Fresno State Sunday afternoon at Beiden Field. The victory improved the Hornets to 18-28 overall and gave the team a 2-1 series victory over the Bulldgos. Fresno State dropped to 26-24.
Fuller, who had never had more than two hits in a game, doubled in the first inning, singled in the third and fifth, and hit a three-run home run in the sixth. The senior from Dixon, Calif., ended the day with a team0high four RBI.
The Hornets scored three runs in the first inning behind a leadoff double from Tim Reimer and singles from Brown and Chris Kinsey. Mario Celillo then hit a sacrifice fly to drive the second run before Fuller doubled to left center.
The team added to its lead in the fifth inning when Bret LeVier drew a bases-loaded walk to make the score, 4-0. The Hornets then exploded in the fifth inning for four runs to take an 8-0 lead. During the inning, Sacramento State sent nine batters to the plate and took advantage of three walks, two singles and Fuller's fifth home run of the season.
The lead appeared to be plenty for Hornet starter Marshall Plouffe. The sophomore allowed just two hits through the first six innings and faced just one batter over the minimum. Plouffe's run, however, ended in the seventh inning when Fresno State posted five runs.
Chris Patrick opened the rally with a single and moved to third on a double by Casey McGehee. An error by LeVier loaded the bases before Plouffe walked in a run. The Bulldogs added their second run on a sacrifice fly to center field before Tobey Riday-White doubled to left center plating two more runs. The final run of the inning came on a double by Carl Lipsey. That hit ended the day for Plouffe who was replaced by junior Dusty Decker.
The damage in the inning could have been worse but Celillo made a running catch on the warning track in right field to retire the side and prevent two more runs from scoring.
Decker concldued the game by not allowing a hit in his 2.1 innings of work to earn his second save of the year. Plouffe improved to 4-7 with the win.
As a team, Sacramento State pounded out 15 hits against five different Fresno State pitchers. Eight of the team's nine starters had at least one hit and four players had multiple hits.
The Hornets return home to face San Jose State on Tuesday, May 7. The game will be played at Hornet Field and is scheduled to start at 2:30 p.m.
