CORREIA LEADS CAL POLY PAST BASEBALL

4/28/2002

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Senior Kevin Correia held Sacramento State to just three hits in eight innings of work to help lead Cal Poly to a 9-0 victory Sunday afternoon at Hornet Field. The win completed a three-game sweep for the Mustangs.

Cal Poly improved to 24-23-1 overall and 9-6 in Big West Conference games. The Hornets dropped to 15-27 overall and 0-15 in league games.

Correia did not allow a hit through the first 5.1 innings of the game. Freshman Everet Rincon ended the possible no-hitter when he laid down a bunt which was fielded by Correia. First baseman Brian Haskell also charged on the play and forced Correia to attempt to tag Rincon. Correia and Rincon became tangled up just shy of first base and it was ruled that Correia never applied a tag. Senior Tito Barba later added an infield single in the same inning.

For the game, Correia struck out seven and walked just two to improve to 8-3 on the season. Greg Bochy threw a scoreless ninth inning in relief.

Cal Poly scored two runs in the first inning behind a leadoff triple from Josh Wyrick who later scored on a Bryan Gant ground out. Kyle Wilson added the second run in the inning when he hit his ninth home run of the season over the left field fence. The Mustangs added single runs in the second and third inning before scoring five more in the seventh.

As a team, Cal Poly collected 14 hits off of three Sacramento State pitchers. Eight different Mustangs had at least one hit led by Gant’s 3-for-4 outing.

Sacramento State takes to the road for four games next week. The team plays at Nevada on Tuesday, Apr. 30, before playing a three-game non-conference series at Fresno State beginning on Friday, May 3. The team’s next home game will come on May 7 against San Jose State.
