BASEBALL FALLS TO LONG BEACH STATE, 9-1

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — No. 18 Long Beach State scored eight runs over the final five innings to claim a 9-1 victory over Sacramento State Saturday afternoon in Big West Conference baseball action at Hornet Field. The win completed the three-game sweep for the 49ers who outscored the Hornets, 32-5, during the series.

LBSU improved to 18-9 overall and 6-0 in Big West games. Sacramento State dropped to 13-13 overall and 0-3 in conference play.

Long Beach State jumped on the board with a run in the third inning on a two-out single to center by Chris Wright which scored Brad Davis. The 49ers added two more runs in the fifth inning on a home run by Paul MAnulty over the right field fence.

Sacramento State took advantage of doubles by Danny Gill and Tito Barba in the bottom of the fifth inning to make the score, 3-1. From that point, however, LBSU posted six unanswered runs to put the game away.

The 49ers scored two runs in the sixth inning on a triple by Nick Covarrubias and a single from Mike Hofius. The team then added a run in both the seventh and the eighth inning before scoring two in the ninth on a triple by McAnulty.

Abe Alvarez improved to 7-1 on the season after throwing six innings. Alvarez surrendered five hits and struck out three. Jeff Groeger (4-3) took the loss for the Hornets.

LBSU was led by Jeremy Reed’s three hits. McAnulty, Hofius, Davis and Kevin Randel each added two hits. Sacramento State was paced by Danny Gill who recorded two hits.

The Hornets will continue Big West play next weekend against Cal State Fullerton. The three-game series against the Titans begins on Friday, April 5, at 7 p.m.
