SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Chris Wright and Jeremy Reed each had three hits as the No. 18 Long Beach State baseball team continued its assault against Sacramento State in a 7-2 victory Friday afternoon at Hornet Field.The win improved the 49ers to 17-9 overall and 5-0 in the Big West Conference. It also gave LBSU a 2-0 advantage in the three-game series against Sacramento State. The Hornets dropped to 13-12 overall and 0-2 in league games.
Long Beach State, which had 23 hits in the first game of the series on Thursday, opened Friday’s game with a walk by Kevin Randel. Wright followed with a single to center and Reed added another single up the middle to score Randel. Todd Jennings kept the rally alive with a single to right which scored Reed. The 49ers scored a third run in the inning when Nick Covarrubias grounded into a double-play that allowed Wright to score from third.
The three runs proved to be enough for starter Jered Weaver. The freshman threw 7.0 innings and held Sacramento State to one run and six hits.
After LBSU added a run in the fourth inning, the Hornets got on the board with an RBI-double by Bret LeVier which plated Joe Evans. Sacramento State’s best opportunity to score came later in the inning when the team had the bases loaded with one out. Weaver, however, produced a ground-ball double play to third base to end the rally.
As a team, LBSU continued its balanced offensive attack as nine different 49ers recorded a hit in the game. Long Beach State now has 38 hits in the two games including 28 singles.
The three-game series will conclude on Saturday. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p..m. at Hornet Field.
