BASEBALL, STONY BROOK SPLIT DOUBLEHEADER

3/24/2002

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Sacramento State and Stony Brook split a baseball doubleheader Sunday afternoon at Hornet Field. The Hornets won the first game, 3-1, before the Seawolves captured a 7-5 victory in a wild finish to game two.

The split moved Sacramento State’s record to 13-10 while Stony Brook stands at 7-4.

After falling behind, 1-0, the Hornets scored single runs in the sixth, seventh and eighth innings to win the first game. Freshman Chris McCormack was 2-for-3 and drove in a run to lead the team. Seniors Ryan Brown and Casey Fuller also had RBIs in the win. Sophomore Marshall Plouffe was credited with the victory after throwing the final three innings of the game. Plouffe surrendered just one hit and struck out three.

In the second game, Stony Brook jumped to a 2-0 lead in the third inning. The Seawolves scored their runs on a sacrifice bunt attempt by Rich Graham. On the play, Graham’s bunt was fielded by first baseman Danny Gill. Gill threw to third for the force out but the throw was errant allowing two runners to score. Stony Brook added to its lead in the fourth inning with a two-run double by Matt Levins.

The score remained 4-0 in favor of the Seawolves until seventh inning where the Hornets scored a pair of runs. The first run scored on a sacrifice fly by Joe Evans and Chris Kinsey scored on a wild pitch to end the productivity. Sacramento State tied the game in the eighth inning on a two-run home run by Bret LeVier. The Hornets had a chance to break the game open but Ryan Brown’s line drive was snagged a diving Graham at second base to close out the inning.

Sacramento State turned to reliever Dusty Decker in the ninth inning. With one out, Andrew Zielinski singled to right field. Decker responded by striking out Devins for the second out of the inning. Following a wild pitch which moved Zielinski to second, the Hornets appeared to be out of the inning when Graham hit a chopper to short. LeVier, however, threw the ball away allowing Zielinski to score. Andrew Larsen followed with a single and Graham scored on a another wild pitch to give the Seawolves a 6-4 advantage. The final run of the inning came when Larsen scored on a throwing error by third baseman Clint Honeycutt.

The Hornets rallied in their portion of the ninth. Evans hit his seventh home run of the season to make the score, 7-5. Mario Celillo and Casey Fuller followed with singles to place runners on first and second with one out. In the next at-bat, LeVier hit a high fly ball to right fly. Right fielder Nick Taormina lost the ball in the sun and had the ball deflect off of his glove. Taormina regrouped in time to force Fuller at second base. Shortstop Matt Devins then threw to third where Rob Sandora tagged out Celillo to end the game.

Sacramento State will continue its homestand with a three-game series against Long Beach State. The series, which marks the first Big West Conference games for the Hornets this season, will be held from Thursday through Saturday. Thursday and Friday’s games will begin at 2 p.m. while Saturday’s contest starts at 2 p.m.
