SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Sacramento State senior catcher Joe Evans was named Big West Conference Baseball Player of the Week today after leading the Hornets to a 3-1 record last week.The Sacramento, Calif., native hit .667 (8-12) with four home runs, two doubles and 13 RBIs in four games. The 6-3 catcher also recorded two walks, a .714 on-base percentage and a 1.833 slugging percentage.
Evans hit a home run in all three games of the Washington State series, including two home runs and six RBIs in the Hornets’ 11-10 victory over the Cougars on Saturday. After going 1-for-2 with an RBI in Sacramento State''s win over Nevada on Tuesday, Evans combined for 12 RBIs in three games against the Cougars.
On Friday, Evans went 1-for-2 with a home run, two runs scored, two walks and three RBIs. He followed up that effort in Saturday’s doubleheader by going a combined 6-for-8 with three home runs and nine RBIs. In the first game of the double dip, Evans went 3-for-4 with a double, a home run and three RBIs. In the nightcap, Evans went 3-for-4 with a double, two home runs, two runs scored and six RBIs.
Evans currently has an eight-game hitting streak and is hitting .500 (13-26) over that span with five home runs and 15 RBIs. The senior has homered in three-consecutive games and is second on the team with a .383 batting average. In addition, he leads the Hornets in slugging percentage (.787) and on-base percentage (.492).
With an overall record of 11-7, Sacramento State, which plays at San Jose State tonight, is currently off to its best start since the 1993 season.
