BASEBALL DROPS FIRST GAME OF SERIES, 4-1, TO LOUISIANA TECH

Kirby Young hit his third home run of the season on Friday but the Hornets lost, 4-1.
SACRAMENTO, Calif. - The Sacramento State baseball team lost 4-1 to Louisiana Tech in the first game of a Western Athletic Conference series on Friday afternoon at John Smith Field.
The Hornets slipped to 18-37 (5-16 WAC) with the loss while the Bulldogs improved to 30-24 (10-11 WAC) after the win.
Sacramento State pitcher Karl Maas (4-5) turned in another quality start, allowing just two runs on seven hits in 6.2 innings with two walks and four strikeouts but took the loss as the Hornets' offense could only muster five hits against Louisiana Tech starter Jeb Stefan and closer Caleb Dudley.
Stefan (7-4) earned the win after going six innings and giving up just one run on five hits with four walks and three strikeouts. Dudley was dominate down the stretch, throwing three perfect innings with two strikeouts to tally his 10th save of the season.
After the Hornets tied up the game 1-1 in the sixth on Kirby Young's third home run of the season, a deep shot to right center field, the Bulldogs tallied single runs in the seventh, eighth and ninth to put away the game.
Sacramento State and Louisiana Tech will meet in doubleheader tomorrow starting at noon. The final game of the series and of the 2011 regular season is 1 p.m. on Sunday.
