BASEBALL STUMBLES VS. FRESNO STATE, 7-3

Kirby Young went 3-for-4 on Friday but the Hornets lost to No. 12 ranked Fresno State.


SACRAMENTO, Calif. -
The Bulldogs scored four runs in the third and two more in the fourth inning to blow open the game and the Sacramento State baseball team lost, 7-3, to No. 12 ranked Fresno State in a Western Athletic Conference game on Friday afternoon at John Smith Field.

The Hornets dropped to 12-27 (0-6 WAC) while the Bulldogs improved to 27-6 (7-2 WAC). Fresno State starter Josh Poytress (5-0) earned the win after allowing three runs (two earned) on eight hits in eight innings with five strikeouts and one walk. His previous two starts were both complete game wins.

Sacramento State starter Dallas Chadwick (2-4) took the loss after allowing six runs on eight hits in six innings with five strikeouts and one walk. Reliever Andrew Galvan allowed one run (earned) in three innings.

Sacramento State took an early one-run lead in the bottom of the first. Derrick Chung was hit by the first pitch in the game from Poytress and moved to third on Kirby Young's single to right center. Chung came home when David Del Grande hit a grounder to second that was turned into a double play, also getting Young at second.

Fresno State exploded in the third inning. Aaron Judge led off with a single and moved to second when catcher Austin Wynns was hit by a pitch. Both came hom e on Danny Muno's two-run double to center. Garrett Weber drove in another run with an RBI bunt single and Jordan Ribera plated the final run of the inning on a massive sacrifice fly to center.

The Hornets answered in the bottom of the third with one run - a RBI double to right from Young.

The Bulldogs tacked on two more runs in the fourth and another in the seventh.

In the bottom of the seventh the Hornets were able to pull out another run with two outs. Eli Davis singled and came all the way around from first on Chung's double off the wall in left.

Young went 3-for-4 with an RBI to lead the Hornets. Young came into the game 2-for-2 against Poytress in his career and recorded hits in his first three at-bats against the Fresno State lefty on Friday.

The Hornets and Bulldogs will conclude their four-game WAC series tomorrow with a doubleheader starting at 11:30 a.m. at John Smith Field.
