Blake Miller went 2-for-3 at the plate but the Hornets lost at Hawai'i, 3-2, on Sunday.
HONOLULU, O'ahu - Down three runs in the top of the ninth, the Sacramento State baseball team scored twice but their rally was cut short and the Hornets lost, 3-2, on Sunday at Hawai'i in the final game of a four-game Western Athletic Conference series.
The Hornets fall to 9-24 (0-4 WAC) with the loss while Hawai'i improves to 18-14 (4-0 WAC) with the win. The Rainbows took all four games in the series.
On Sunday, Hawai'i starter Zach Gallagher (4-1) earned the win after allowing no runs on four hits in seven innings with one walk and five strikeouts. Sacramento State starter Tanner Mendonca (1-3) took the loss despite throwing seven strong innings as well, giving up two runs on three hits with four walks and three strikeouts. Hawai'i's Blair Walters tallied his second save.
With one out in the top of the ninth, Derrick Chung took a walk and advanced to second on Kirby Young's single through the right side. A strike out was the second out in the inning but the Hornets would try and rally with one out left. Dax Turner loaded the bases with a single and Will Soto followed with another single to bring home Chung from third. Andrew Ayers was hit by a pitch in the next at-bat to force in Young but Walters came in for the last out and caused A.J. Nunez to fly out to centerfield.
The Hornets will host Air Force next weekend at John Smith Field for a four-game series before bringing in WAC foe Fresno State the following weekend.
