SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Eight Sacramento State starters had at least one hit and senior Kevin Marzion allowed just five hits and two runs in seven innings as the Hornets defeated Washington State, 9-2, in a non-conference baseball game Friday afternoon at Hornet Field.With the victory, Sacramento State won its third-straight while improving to 10-6. Washington State had its four-game winning streak snapped and dropped to 9-6. Tomorrow's game between the Cougars and Hornets has been changed to a doubleheader, beginning at 11 a.m. There will be no game on Sunday as originally scheduled.
Sacramento State's 3-6 hitters (Chris Kinsey, Joe Evans, Mario Celillo and Casey Fuller) combined to go 5-for-13 while driving in all nine runs. Marzion threw 120 pitches while improving his record to 2-2 on the season. The right-hander limited the Cougars to just five hits and two runs (one earned) despite Washington State entering the game with a .307 team batting average.
After the Cougars jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead in the top of the first, the Hornets responded with four runs in the bottom of the inning. A Celillo two-run double and a two-run single by Fuller highlighted the inning as nine Hornets came to the plate.
The Hornets added two more in the second as Kinsey and Evans both recorded RBIs on ground-outs, giving Sacramento State a 6-1 lead. After Washington State scored a run in the third to cut the lead to 6-2, Evans added some insurance in the fifth with his second home run of the season, a two-run shot off the top of the scoreboard in left field.
Kinsey, who finished the game 2-for-3 with three runs scored and two RBIs, hit his eighth home run of the season in the seventh inning to wrap up the scoring. Kinsey has now hit safely in all but three games this season and is currently hitting a team-best .391. Evans finished 1-for-2 with a pair of walks and three RBIs.
Washington State's Eddie Bonine (3-2) picked up the loss for the Cougars, allowing 10 hits and nine runs over six innings of work.
Sacramento State's Tim Reimer had to leave the game with a hamstring injury after legging out an infield single in the second inning.
