Blake Miller hit his first home run of the season and the Hornets knocked off UCSB, 3-2.
SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - Starting pitcher Dallas Chadwick pitched five strong innings and the Hornets' bullpen shut the door as the Sacramento State baseball team defeated UC Santa Barbara, 3-2, on Saturday afternoon at Caesar Uyesaka Stadium.
The Hornets improve to 4-7 with the win and hand the Gauchos their first loss at home this season, sending them to 4-4 overall.
Chadwick, a freshman from Redding, Calif., earned his first collegiate win after going five innings with one run, five hits, two walks and five strikeouts.
Reliever Andrew Galvan threw three innings of one-hit ball with no walks and two strikeouts. Brandon Sandoval earned his first save of the season as he pitched one inning with one run, two hits, one walk and two strikeouts.
At the dish, leadoff man Eli Davis went 2-for-5 with an RBI in the fourth inning and eight Hornets combined for nine hits. Trevor Paine had an RBI on a sacrifice fly in the first inning and Blake Miller blasted his first home run of the season in the ninth inning. Hunter Adrian posted another hit and now has five in the last three games after tallying just one hits in the first four games.
UC Santa Barbara posted a run in the first inning on Mark Haddow's ground out to third but did not score again until the ninth inning. With runners at first and third and two outs, Trevor Whyte singled to center to drive home Brandon Trinkwon from third. But Sandoval got out the jam when Haddow popped out to first.
Starter Matthew Vedo went five innings for the Gauchos, giving up two runs on seven hits with two walks and six strikeouts. Reliever Nick Capito allowed a run in 3.1 innings with two hits, no walks and two strikeouts. Matthew Brady, Cameron Cuneo and Bryce Uhring combined to get the last two outs in the ninth inning.
Sacramento State and UC Santa Barbara meet up for the rubber match of the three-game series tomorrow at 1 p.m.
