SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Chris Kinsey collected two hits, drove in three runs and pitched 8.0 solid innings to lead the Sacramento State baseball team to a 9-3 victory over the University of San Francisco Sunday afternoon at Hornet Field.The victory improved the Hornets to 8-6 overall and 5-1 at home. The Dons dropped to 5-11.
Heading into the bottom of the sixth inning, USF held a 3-2 lead. Sacramento State, however, opened the inning with a bunt single by Casey Fuller. Danny Gill walked to place runners on first and second before the Dons recorded the first out of the inning. USF opted to bring in T.J. Franco to face Tito Barba who hit the first pitch down the left-field line for a double to score Fuller and tie the game. Everet Rincon kept the rally alive with a single which scored a run and Kinsey added a single up the middle to score a pair.
Sacramento State put the game away in the eighth inning with three runs. The team scored a run on a double by Kinsey, a groundout which plated Tim Reimer and a wild pitch which allowed Kinsey to score from third.
Kinsey threw 129 pitches in his eight innings of work. The sophomore allowed seven hits and three runs while striking out eight and surrendering just two walks. The win improved the Laguna Creek HS graduate to 2-1 this season. At the plate, Kinsey was 2-for-4 including a double. He also drew a walk. This season he is now hitting .379 an leads the team with 20 RBI.
The Dons took the game’s first lead with a run in the third inning coming off a single by Cy Donald. After the Hornets scored two runs in the fourth, USF retook the lead in the fifth inning on a single by Joe Jacobitz and a double by Steve Booth.
Sacramento State will continue its five-game homestand on Tuesday against Nevada. The game will start at 2 p.m. at Hornet Field.
