BASEBALL FALLS, 2-1, TO SAINT MARY'S IN 11 INNINGS

2/22/2011

Trevor Paine (above) was hit by two pitches and had a hit but the Hornets lost to SMC, 2-1.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Starting pitcher Karl Maas gave the Sacramento State baseball team seven innings of one run ball but the offense could not come alive at the end and the Hornets lost, 2-1, to Saint Mary's in 11 innings.

Maas earned the start and pitched seven strong innings, allowing just the one run and three hits with two strikeouts and no walks. James Chamberlin was also strong in relief, allowing just one run in four innings with a pair of strikeouts. But the run turned out to be the game-winner as Gaels were finally able to get to the Hornets' pitching in the 11th inning.

After Chamberlin got Saint Mary's Chris Murphy to ground out to start the 11th inning, catcher Toby DeMello doubled off the left field fence to put a runner in scoring position for the Gaels. DeMello moved to third after a single to left center by Michael Gastelum and would later score on a fielder's choice.

In the bottom of the 11th, David Del Grande led off with a single through the left side and designated hitter Brent Hottman followed that up with a nearly identical single in between the shortstop and third baseman to put two runners on with no outs. But after a strike out and another fielder's choice, Saint Mary's reliever Dorsey Ek coerced a ground ball to third to end the inning.

Thomas Cortese earned the win for Saint Mary's while Ek took the save. Chamberlin was saddled with the loss.

Both Del Grande and Hottman went 2-for-5 at the dish with Derrick ChungBlake Miller and Trevor Paine also getting hits. Paine was also hit by a pair of pitches.

The Hornets had seven hits and took six walks while the Gaels also had seven hits to go with four walks. Saint Mary's left just three men on base while Sacramento State stranded 12 on base.
