SAINT MARY’S POUNDS BASEBALL, 11-1

2/17/2002

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Jason Waugh and Brian Vesce each scored four runs to help lead Saint Mary’s to an 11-1 victory over Sacramento State Sunday afternoon at a soggy Hornet Field.

The win gave the Gaels a 2-1 victory in the series and improved the team’s record to 2-7 this season. The Hornets fell to 3-3.

Waugh capped a stellar weekend by going 4-for-5 with a pair of doubles and a home run. The center fielder also drove in four runs. Vesce was 2-for-4 with a walk but managed to score four times with the help of poor Sacramento State defense. As a team, the Hornets committed six errors which resulted in four unearned runs.

Saint Mary’s broke a scoreless tie in the fourth inning when Tim Spooner doubled to right center scoring Brian Houle. The Gaels added three runs in the fifth to put the game away.

The Gaels added to their advantage with two runs in the sixth behind the help of two Hornet errors. The team added two more in the eighth on a double by Waugh and an RBI by Teahen. The final three runs came in the ninth inning. Waugh drove in two on his fourth home run of the season.

Sacramento State was limited to just five hits on the afternoon. Eric Bowden tossed eight innings for Saint Mary’s and struck out 10. Chris Kinsey (2-for-3) was the only Hornet to have two hits.

Sacramento State travels to UC Davis on Tuesday before hosting Centenary next weekend. Tuesday’s contest against the Aggies begins at 2 p.m.
