MORAGA, Calif. — Jason Waugh was 4-for-4 with a home run, a triple and three RBI to help lead Saint Mary’s to a 4-3 win over Sacramento State Friday afternoon at Louis Gusto Field. The loss snapped the Hornets’ two game win streak and evened the team’s record at 2-2. The Gaels, who had lost six in a row, improved to 1-6.
Sacramento State opened the game with back-to-back singles before Chris Kinsey doubled in a run and Mario Celillo drove home another on a fielder’s choice. The team’s lead, however, was cut in half when Waugh opened the bottom of the first inning with a home run.
The Hornets made the score 3-1 in the fourth inning on a double by shortstop Tito Barba which scored Bret LeVier. The Gaels, once again, answered in the bottom of the inning with an RBI double by Brian Houle. Saint Mary’s took the lead in the fifth inning on a triple to left-center by Waugh which scored a pair of runs.
Sacramento State had a couple of opportunities to tie the game but the team hit into a pair of double plays and had a runner caught stealing to end all threats.
The loss spoiled another strong pitching effort by Kevin Marzion. The senior threw 8.0 innings and allowed six hits while striking out five. SMC was paced by a complete game from Mike Byer who fanned four.
The two teams will resume their three-game series on Saturday. The game will be played at Hornet Field in Sacramento and is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
