HONOLULU -- Chris Kinsey capped a strong openening weekend by picking up the win in Sacramento State's 5-2 win over Hawai'i on Sunday afternoon at Les Murakami Stadium.
The win improved the Hornets to 2-1 on the season and gave the team a series victory against the Rainbows. UH fell to 2-5.
Hawai`i took an early 2-0 lead in the game when Danny Mocny and Kevin Gilbride drove in a run. But Sacramento State responded in the fifth inning as Casey Fuller drove in a run and an error by Brent Cook gave up two more. Tim Reimer then drove in another run to cap the four-run inning. The Hornets then got another run on a double steal in the sixth inning. Gregg Omori was able to drive in one run for Hawai`i in the seventh but it wasn't enough.
Kinsey earned the win in his first start of the season. The sophomore also hit two home runs on Friday night and collected a pair of hits on Saturday.
Sacramento State returns to action on Friday when it travels to Saint Mary's. The two teams will then play on Saturday and Sunday in Sacramento. Both weekend games will start at 1 p.m. at Hornet Field.
