HONOLULU — Scooter Martines knocked in three runs on a bases-loaded triple to break a 1-1 tie and help lead Hawai‘i to a 6-3 win over the Sacramento State baseball team Friday evening at Les Murakami Stadium.The win improved the Rainbows to 2-3 overall. The Hornets, who were playing their first game of the 2002 season, fell to 0-1.
Sacramento State scored the game’s first run when Chris Kinsey hit a home run to left center in the top of the first. UH tied the game in the bottom of the inning on a single by catcher Brian Bock which scored Brent Cook.
The Rainbows broke the game open in the fifth inning. With one out, Lane Nagowa singled to center and later stole second. Arthur Guillen then walked moved to second on a double steal. After Gregg Omori was issued an intentional walk, Martines tripled down the right field line clearing the bases.
The Hornets added another run in the seventh when Kinsey hit his second home run of the game. The team made the score 5-3 in the eighth when Casey Fuller scored from third on a throwing error.
The Rainbows added an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth on a double by Cortland Wilson.
Kinsey and senior catcher Joe Evans each went 2-for-4 to lead Sacramento State. Senior Kevin Marzion lasted 6.0 innings and allowed four earned runs and five hits while striking out seven.
Bryan Lee earned the victory for Hawai‘i after tossing 7.2 innings. Lee surrendered six hits and three earned runs. Sean Yamashita earned his first save of the year by retiring the final two batters.
The two teams will continue their three-game series on Saturday at 8:35 p.m. PST.
