CHILTON AND PAINE HOMER BUT BASEBALL DROPS FINAL GAME OF SERIES TO CAL STATE NORTHRIDGE 10-6
3/28/2010
NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - Juniors Jake Chilton and Trevor Paine each provided home runs, but the Sacramento State baseball team fell to the Cal State Northridge Matadors by a score of 10-6 on Sunday, March 28.
With the loss, the Hornets fall to 7-14-1 while the Matadors improved to 15-7.
The Hornets opened the scoring in the top of the first as after a pair of walks and a sacrifice bunt, Paine came to the plate and knocked his third home run of the series, a three-run blast to straight away center, to give Sacramento State a 3-0 lead. The Matadors then repeated the feat in the bottom of the first, getting a pair of leadoff walks, followed by a three-run homer by Ryan Pineda to make the score 3-3.
The Matadors then took their first lead of the contest in the bottom of the second, as following another pair of leadoff walks and a bunt single, Pineda got a RBI on a sacrifice fly to center, giving his team a 4-3 lead. Three more runs crossed the plate in the inning, giving Cal State Northridge a 7-3 advantage after two innings.
After Cal State Northridge scored a run apiece in the bottom of the third and the bottom of the fifth to take a 9-3 advantage, Sacramento State would mount a rally in the top of the sixth. Junior Dustin Stumpf collected his first career RBI with a fielder's choice groundout, and Chilton drove him in with a two-run home to left, his second of the season, to pull the Hornets to within three at 9-6. The Matadors added an insurance run in the bottom of the seventh, and Sacramento State was unable to score any additional runs, giving Cal State Northridge a 10-6 victory.
Junior Mike Guglielmo (0-2) picked up the loss for the Hornets, allowing seven runs, all of which were earned, on five hits while walking five in 1.1 innings of work. Cal State Northridge starter Shawn Wilyman fared no better, lasting just one-third of an inning, allowing three runs on two hits while walking two. Billy Ott (2-0) pitched well out of the Matador bullpen, however, to pick up the victory, allowing two runs on one hit in 5.1 innings, walking five and striking out six.
Senior Josh Powers led the Hornets with two hits, while Paine collected three RBI with his fourth home run of the season. C.J. Belanger led the Matadors with a 3-for-4 performance at the plate.
Sacramento State returns to action on Wednesday, March 31 as they host the Albany Great Danes. First pitch from Hornet Field is scheduled for 2 p.m.
