NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - Junior Trevor Paine hit a pair of solo home runs, but the Sacramento State baseball team fell to the Cal State Northridge Matadors by a score of 14-2 on Saturday, March 27.

With the loss, the Hornets fall to 7-13-1, while the Matadors improve to 14-7.

Sacramento State took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second as Paine led off the inning with a solo homer to right field, his second of the season.

After Northridge scored four runs in the bottom of the second and one in the bottom of the third to take a 5-1 lead, Paine came up again with one down and hit another solo home run the opposite way to right to pull the Hornets to within three at 5-2.

From there, however, the Matadors outscored the Hornets 9-0 for the remainder of the game, taking home a 14-2 victory.

Senior Jose Ramirez (0-2) picked up the loss for the Hornets, allowing five runs on eight hits in three innings of work. Paul Tremlin (5-1) earned the victory, allowing two runs on six hits while striking out eight in seven innings.

Paine and senior Dan McCarthy led the Hornets with two hits apiece, while the Matadors were led by TS Reed, who went 5-for-5 on the afternoon.

The two teams will play the rubber game of the three-game series on Sunday, March 28 at 1 p.m.
