BASEBALL FALLS TO UC DAVIS

3/6/2010

DAVIS, Calif. - The Sacramento State baseball team surrendered 19 hits while posting just seven in a 13-2 loss to UC Davis on Saturday, March 6 at Dobbins Stadium.

With the loss, the Hornets fall to 3-5, while the Aggies improve to 6-5.

The Aggies opened the scoring in the bottom of the first, scoring a pair of unearned runs. After Justin Schafer reached on a two-out Hornet error, Scott Lyman doubled to give UC Davis a pair of runners in scoring position with two down. Eric Johnson drove them both home with a two-run single through the left side of the infield, giving the Aggies a 2-0 lead.

Sacramento State got a run back in the top of the second, as junior Derrick Chung led off the inning with a double down the left field line, and came around to score on a RBI single by junior Brent Hottman, pulling the Hornets to within one at 2-1. UC Davis came back in the bottom of the inning to score another run to retake a two run lead at 3-1, as Daniel Cepin provided an RBI groundout. Lyman then doubled again in the bottom of the third, advanced to third on a passed ball and scored on a wild pitch, giving the Aggies a comfortable 4-1 cushion.

The Hornets would cut the gap to 4-2 in the top of the fourth as sophomore Justin Lamb hit his second home run of the series, a deep shot to left-center field. But the Aggies would have the answer, pushing five runs across in the bottom of the fourth to put the game away. The striking blows in the inning were back-to-back home runs from Schafer and Lyman. Sacramento State could muscle out only two hits over the final five innings, and the Aggies would go on to score four more runs to post a 13-2 victory.

Anthony Kupbens (1-2) picked up the win for UC Davis, allowing two runs on six hits over seven innings of work. Junior Brandon Sandoval (1-2) picked up the loss for the Hornets, allowing eight runs, six of which were earned, on nine hits in 3.1 innings.

Chung led the Hornets at the plate with a 2-for-4 performance, including a double, a single, and a run score. Five other Hornets pitched in with one hit apiece. Lyman led the way for UC Davis, going 4-for-5 at the plate with two home runs, two doubles, two RBI and four runs scored. Schafer and Johnson each added three RBI for the Aggies, who posted their second series victory of the season.

The two teams will close out the three-game set on Sunday, March 7 at Hornet Field. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m., with senior lefthander Jose Ramirez (0-0) on the hill for the Hornets, opposing the Aggies offensive hero from today's game, Lyman.
