LAMB AND POWERS HOMER, BUT BASEBALL FALLS TO UC DAVIS 11-3

3/5/2010

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Senior Josh Powers hit a solo home run in the third inning, and sophomore Justin Lamb hit a two-run homer in the fifth, but the Sacramento State baseball team fell to the UC Davis Aggies by a score of 11-3 on Friday, March 5.

With the loss, the Hornets fall to 4-3 on the season, while UC Davis improves to 5-5.

In what began as a pitchers dual, UC Davis struck first in the scoring department, plating a pair of unearned runs in the top of the third after a two-out Hornet error to take a 2-0 lead. The Hornets immediately pulled back to within a run, as with two down in the bottom half of the inning, Powers hammered a ball over the left field fence for his third home run of the season, cutting the Hornet deficit down to 2-1.

UC Davis scored three runs in the top of the fourth, as David Popkins hit a mammoth blast to right field to lead off the inning, making the score 3-1. The Aggies weren't done in the inning, as Eric Johnson followed with a double, and he came around to score on a RBI single by Scott Kalush, putting UC Davis up 4-1.

The bottom of the fifth saw the Hornets pull to within a run, as junior Brent Hottman walked to lead off the inning, and Lamb followed one batter later with a homer to left, his first of the season, making the score 4-3.

The Aggies blew the came open in the top of the seventh, rallying behind head coach Rex Peters, who was ejected from the game with one out in the inning. UC Davis ended up scoring three runs in the inning, and added two runs in the eighth and two runs in the ninth to win by a margin of 11-3.

Dayne Quist (3-0) picked up the win for the Aggies, pitching a complete game while allowing three runs on six hits while striking out five Hornets. Sophomore Jesse Darrah (0-2) picked up the loss for the Hornets, allowing seven runs, five earned, on eight hits in 6.2 innings pitched.

Powers led the Hornets offensively with a 2-for-3 day, including the home run. Four other Hornets recorded a lone hit apiece. UC Davis was led by Popkins who finished 3-for-4 with two runs scored and a RBI. Daniel Cepin, Justin Schafer and Scott Lyman each added two hits for the Aggies.

The two teams will be in action tomorrow at Dobbins Stadium on the campus of UC Davis at 1:05 p.m. Junior righthander Brandon Sandoval (1-1) will take the mound for the Hornets, and will be opposed by UC Davis lefthander Anthony Kupbens (0-2).
