TUCSON, Ariz. - The Sacramento State baseball team dropped an 11-2 decision to the Arizona Wildcats in the final game of a three-game set on Sunday, Feb. 22.
With the loss, the Hornets fall to 1-2 on the season, while the Wildcats improve to 2-1.
After the first nine batters of the game were retired in order, Arizona provided both the first baserunners and first runs of the contest in the bottom of the second. With runners on second and third with one out, Daniel Butler singled home Brad Glenn, who was hit by a pitch to open the inning, making the score 1-0. The advantage was pushed to 2-0 later in the inning, with Dillon Baird scoring on a Sacramento State error.
After the Hornets were retired in order to start the third, Arizona struck for five runs on five hits, including a RBI double by Glenn, a RBI groundout by Steve Selsky, a two-run double by Jett Bandy and a RBI double by Hunter Pace.
The Hornets cut the lead to 7-2 in the top of the seventh, as senior Blake Crosby reached on an error to lead off the inning, and freshman Aaron Crouch followed with a double, giving the Hornets runners on second and third with nobody out. Senior Hunter Martinez collected a RBI groundout, and sophomore Derrick Chung followed with a RBI groundout of his own.
Arizona put the game out of reach in the seventh, scoring four runs, to account for the final margin of 11-2.
Sophomore Chris Baek (0-1) picked up the loss for the Hornets, allowing five runs on four hits in two innings in his first collegiate start. Donn Roach (1-0), also making his first collegiate start, picked up the win for the Wildcats, allowing two runs, neither of which were earned, on three hits in six innings, striking out seven Hornets.
Crouch led the Hornet charge during his first career start in left field, going 2-for-3 with a run scored. Senior Blake Crosby, juniors Dan McCarthy and Tim Wheeler, along with freshman Justin Lamb each produced a hit for the Hornets, with Crosby adding a run scored.
Sacramento State will return to action on Tuesday night in Stockton as they take on Pacific at 5:35 p.m.
