SAN JOSE, Calif. - The Sacramento State baseball team dropped a doubleheader to the San Jose State Spartans, losing game one 13-1 in eight innings and falling 5-1 in the nightcap on Saturday, March 15 at Municipal Stadium.
With the day's results, the Hornets fall to 4-10 on the season, 1-2 in the WAC, while San Jose State improves to 10-5, 2-1 inside the conference.
In game one, San Jose State made up for the lack of hits in Friday night's 3-1 loss to the Hornets, connecting on 13 hits and erupting for an eight-run inning in the sixth. After the Spartans took a 2-0 lead in the game, the Hornets would push their only run across the board of the game in the fifth. Senior Jeff Hannah was hit by a pitch with one out, moved to second after senior Travis Kirkman reached on an error, then moved to third on a failed pickoff attempt. He was finally driven home one a RBI groundout by junior Hunter Martinez, making the score 2-1. The Spartans scored the games final 11 runs, the final three of which came in the bottom of the eighth inning, ending the game. In the NCAA, baseball games can end on a 10-run mercy rule if both coaches agree to it before hand.
Game two saw the Spartans take a 1-0 lead into the third inning, when the Hornets tied it at one apiece. Junior Blake Crosby provided a one-out single, and advanced to second on a single by freshman Brent Hottman. Following a Martinez walk, senior Ryan Blair plated Crosby on a RBI fielders choice, but with runners on first and third with two outs, the Hornets were unable to push any additional runs across. San Jose State sealed the victory with a run in the fourth and three runs in the fifth to pick up their second victory of the day.
Spartan Max Peterson (1-1) picked up the win in game one, allowing two hits and just the lone unearned run in six innings of work. Trevor York (0-3) allowed five runs, four of which were earned, on six hits in 5.2 innings pitched, picking up the loss. Junior Gabe Jacobo and Kirkman provided the Hornets' only two hits in the contest. Game two saw Spartan starter Scott Sobczak (2-0) throw a complete game, scattering one run on eight hits, walking one and striking out nine. Sophomore Tommy Elrod (0-1), in his first career start, allowing five runs on eight hits in 4.1 innings pitched, picking up the loss. Freshman Chris Baek provided 3.2 innings of hitless relief, striking out three without surrendering a walk.Senior David Flores went 3-for-4 in the contest, with three singles and a stolen base.
The Hornets and Spartans close out the series with a single game on Sunday. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
