BASEBALL'S LATE INNING COMEBACK FALLS SHORT IN LOSS 9-6 LOSS TO NEVADA

RENO, Nev. – Sacramento State’s late-inning comeback fell short in a 9-6 loss to Nevada on Friday night at Peccole Park.

The Hornets fall to 20-30 on the season and 8-11 in the Western Athletic Conference, while the Wolf Pack improves to 19-26 overall 6-12 in conference play.

Nevada right-hander Tim Schoeninger (4-6) was responsible for shutting down Sacramento State’s offense, recording eight strikeouts and surrendering four runs (one earned) on seven hits in his 8.0 innings of work.

Nevada used a six-run fifth inning to take a 9-0 lead over Sacramento State, scoring on three hits, three walks, two hit by pitches and one Hornet error.

Starting left-hander Matt Campbell (4-9) took the loss for Sacramento State after pitching 4.1 innings and allowing seven runs (four earned) on six hits and three walks.

Sophomore catcher Brett Tanigawa was responsible for Sacramento State’s first run of the game with a RBI-single to right field that plated senior Everet Rincon in the top of the eighth. Freshman Gabe Jacobo’s RBI-single to left then scored junior Patrick Cummins. Following up Jacobo, in just his third game of the year, senior Josh Levin hit a two-run single up the middle to cut the Hornets’ deficit to five runs.

In the ninth, Rincon led things off with a double to right center and later scored on Cummins’ RBI fielder’s choice. Jacobo then added his second RBI of the game, scoring Cummins on his first career double off the center field wall.

The Wolf Pack scored two runs in the bottom of the fourth to take a 3-0 lead with David Ciarlo’s RBI-single, scoring Matt Suleski from second. Durell Williams’ RBI- fielder’s choice was responsible for Nevada’s third run.
