SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Sacramento State tallied 16 hits, led by senior outfielders Jim Strombach and Brian Conradi, in Sacramento State’s 9-6 victory over UC Davis on Tuesday afternoon at Hornet Field.Strombach, who finished the game 3-for-5, gave the Hornets an early lead with his first home run of the season. Junior Gary Johnson led off the first with a single, setting up Strombach for his two-run shot to left center. It was the Aiea, Hawaii, native’s third career blast.
Sacramento State (20-24) is now on a three-game winning streak as it heads to Hawai’i for a three-game Western Athletic Conference series beginning on Friday.
Sophomore David Flores kept the inning going with a two-out double to left field, followed by Conradi, who earned one of his three RBIs on the day with a single to left. The Bakersfield, Calif., native went 3-for-4, improving his season average to .341. The second-year outfielder, who was responsible for the Hornets’ two-game winning RBIs in wins against Louisiana Tech, is now on a five-game hitting streak.
With a 3-1 lead entering the bottom of the third, senior Brian Blauser led off the inning with a double to the left field wall and scored the Hornets’ first run of the inning on Flores’ RBI groundout. With one out and senior Pat Keiper at second, it was again Conradi’s aggressiveness at the plate, coming through with a RBI-double to left. The Hornets added their third run of the inning when Conradi scored on junior Montana Dye’s double down the left field line, finishing the inning with three runs on four hits and three doubles.
Junior right-hander Cyrus Sarraf pitched 4.0 innings in the start, allowing just one unearned run and three hits. The Irvine, Calif., native even got out of a jam in the top of the fourth. With runners at first and third, UC Davis designate hitter Kevin James hit into a double play to end the inning.
The Hornets added two runs in the bottom of the fourth with a two-out double from Blauser. The Elk Grove, Calif., native scored on a RBI-single from Flores and Conradi recorded his third RBI, scoring Keiper on a single to right.
Sacramento State had a 8-1 lead after four innings, but UC Davis responded with five runs in the fifth and sixth innings. James led the Aggies with a 2-for-4 performance, while shortstop Brandon Oliver hit a two-run double down the left field line in the sixth.
Travis Kane (3-4) earned the win for Sacramento State after pitching 4.1 innings and allowing just two runs on four hits.
Strombach added his team-leading second triple of the year in the fifth and his team-leading 11th stolen base in the eighth. Senior Everet Rincon recorded two sacrifices, now leading the team with 10 and improving his all-time total to 33, a program record.
Flores, who was 2-for-5 on the day, produced his team-leading 13th double with two RBIs, while Blauser added two doubles in his 2-for-5 performance. Johnson finished 2-for-5, continuing to lead the team with 59 hits and 20 multiple-hit games. Keiper was 2-for-3 with two runs scored and is now batting .346 on the year.
Paul Gonzales took the loss for the Aggies (13-23) after allowing three runs on four hits in one inning of work.
