CONRADI HOMERS, SCHLAGER STRIKES OUT NINE IN 2-1 VICTORY OVER LOUISIANA TECH

4/23/2006

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - In his first start of the season, John Schlager struck out nine and pitched eight innings in Sacramento State’s 2-1 victory over Louisiana Tech on Sunday afternoon at Hornet Field.

The Hornets, who improve to 19-24 on the year and 8-7 in the Western Athletic Conference, take the series from the first-place Bulldogs, 2-1, after Louisiana Tech (27-15, 9-5) entered the weekend on an eight-game winning streak and not having lost two consecutive games since March 25.

After the Hornets'' 11-10 victory on Saturday in extra innings, Sunday’s game was scoreless through the first six, with Schlager and Bulldog starter Jericho Jones both commanding the mound.

In the top of the seventh, Jones took his turn offensively with one out, and in his first at-bat of the game hit his 13th home run of the season to center field.

After giving up the home run, Schlager – a junior left-hander out of Cañada JC – struck out Mims Boyce and Adam Cobb to end the inning.

Senior left fielder Brain Conradi then returned the favor in the bottom of the seventh. Sophomore David Flores picked up the Hornets’ second hit of the game with a single, setting up Conradi’s two-run blast to left field, landing on top of the parking structure.

It was the Bakersfield, Calif., native’s second home run of the season and fourth of his career. Conradi, in his second season at Sacramento State, was also responsible for the game-winning RBI in the bottom of the 10th inning on Saturday.

In his eight of innings of work, Schlager (1-0) allowed seven hits and walked only one batter.

In the loss, Jones (5-2) finished the game allowing two runs on three hits while striking out five.

After pitching two innings on Saturday and earning the win, Hornet closer Billy Sinacori pitched the ninth inning and picked up his fifth save of the season.

The Auburn, Calif., native entered the game with the tying run on first, but did not surrender a hit to garner the save backed by a diving stop from Flores on Jones'' infield chopper.

Sacramento State will next host UC Davis on Tuesday at Hornet Field before heading to Hawai’i for a three-game WAC series beginning on Friday, April 28.
