SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Senior left fielder Brian Conradi recorded the game-winning RBI in the bottom of the 10th inning to score Jim Strombach and lead Sacramento State to an 11-10 victory over Louisiana Tech on Saturday afternoon at Hornet Field.With the victory, the Hornets improve to 18-24 on the season and 7-7 in the Western Athletic Conference, while Louisiana Tech, currently first in the standings, falls to 27-14 and 9-4 in the WAC. The weekend series is now tied at one game apiece, with the rubber game scheduled for 1 p.m. on Sunday. Sacramento State’s win also snapped Louisiana Tech’s eight-game winning streak.
With the game tied 10-10 entering extra innings, junior right-hander Billy Sinacori retired the side in order, including striking out Kevin Winn, to set up Sacramento State’s game-winning run in the bottom of the 10th.
Strombach, the Hornets’ starting center fielder, led things off with a double to left center and advanced to third on catcher Buddy Morales’ sacrifice hit, before Louisiana Tech right-hander Amos Ramon loaded the bases, intentionally walking Pat Keiper and David Flores. Conradi’s fielder’s choice fell to the Bulldogs’ shortstop, but in a play at the plate, Strombach beat the tag to score.
The Aiea, Hawaii, native finished the game 2-for-6, with three runs scored and his team-leading 10th stolen base of the season. Conradi, a Bakersfield, Calif., native was 2-for-6 from the plate with two runs scored.
Sacramento State tallied 17 hits in the game, led by Montana Dye’s 3-for-5, two-RBI, two-run performance. Flores, who now leads the team with eight multiple-RBI games, was 2-for-4 with two RBIs and continues to lead the team against WAC competition with a .511 average.
Senior Everet Rincon recorded a single-game career-high three RBIs and now leads the team with eight sacrifice hits on the year. For the second time this season, Morales was hit by a pitch three times. He is one of only three players in program history to be hit three times in a single game.
Gary Johnson, Devin Spurling and Keiper also recorded two hits apiece for Sacramento State.
Sinacori (3-1) earned the win for the Hornets, pitching two innings and surrendering one unearned run on two hits. The Hornets'' closer continues to lead the staff with a 2.62 ERA.
Sacramento State recovered from an early deficit with a six-run inning in the bottom of the second. Flores and Conradi led off the inning with consecutive singles, before Dye’s two-run single put the Hornets’ first runs on the scoreboard. First baseman Devin Spurling kept the inning alive with a single down the left field line and Dye scored from third on Rincon’s RBI sacrifice bunt. Gary Johnson’s RBI-double to left field plated Spurling, before Morales was struck and Keiper walked to load the bases for Flores, who put the go-ahead runs on the scoreboard with a two-run single to center.
In the top of the third, Sacramento State starter Mitch Lively retired the side in order backed by Dye’s diving stop in foul territory. The Glendora, Calif., native then doubled down the left field line to lead off the bottom of the third, eventually giving the Hornets a 7-5 lead when he scored on Rincon’s RBI-groundout.
In the fifth, the Bulldogs tied the game on Albie Goulder’s two-run shot to right field. Goulder finished his day 2-for-5 with three RBIs and two runs.
Sacramento State added runs in the fifth an sixth innings and had a 9-7 lead heading into the eighth. Brian Rike led off the inning for Louisiana Tech with a solo home run before Ben Tabor was walked and Nick Grunenwald singled to put the go-ahead run at first. With no outs, senior James Wheeler took the mound. Grunenwald scored on a sacrifice fly, but Wheeler, a 2002 El Camino High School graduate, recorded two strikeouts to escape the inning.
In the bottom of the eighth, Strombach advanced to third on a single from Morales and gave the Hornets’ a 10-9 lead, alertly scoring on a passed ball.
Louisiana Tech scored the game-tying run in the bottom of the ninth on an error to send the game into extra innings.
Amos (1-1) took the loss for the Bulldogs after pitching 2.0 innings and allowing one run on one hit, while walking four. Starter Matt Lacy went 5.1 innings, surrendering nine runs on 11 hits.
