BASEBALL’S WINNING STREAK SNAPPED IN LOSS TO SAN JOSE STATE

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - San Jose State snapped Sacramento State’s five-game winning streak, defeating the Hornets, 6-1, on Thursday afternoon at Hornet Field.

Sacramento State falls to 16-21 on the year and 5-5 in the Western Athletic Conference, while the Spartans improve to 23-14 overall and 4-3 in the WAC.

The Spartans’ Loren Moneypenny (3-2) pitched a four-hit complete game, allowing just one run while striking out seven.

The game was scoreless after three innings until San Jose State right fielder Donato Giovanatto hit a two-run shot to left field.

The Spartans built on their lead with runs in the sixth and seventh innings, before Sacramento State scored its only run of the game in the bottom of the seventh.

After Kyle Atrat was walked to lead off the inning, the Clovis, Calif., native scored from first on David Flores’ RBI-double to left center.

Flores, the WAC Hitter of the Week, recorded his eighth double of the season and is now on a team-leading seven-game hitting streak.

San Jose State, which totaled nine hits, was led by Chris Williammee. The Spartans’ designated hitter finished the day 3-for-4, while Giovanatto hit 2-for-5 with two runs scored.

Also recording hits for Sacramento State was Atrat, shortstop Everet Rincon and center fielder Jim Strombach. Rincon recorded his team-leading ninth stolen base of the season, while Strombach picked up his eighth.

Sophomore Mitch Lively (0-3) took the loss for the Hornets, pitching 6.0 innings and allowing three runs on seven hits. The Susanville, Calif., native recorded five strikeouts.

Sacramento State and San Jose State will play the second game of their series at 1 p.m. on Friday at Hornet Field.
