SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Gary Johnson’s RBI single to right field in the bottom of the ninth scored Sacramento State’s game-winning run in a 5-4 victory over Nevada on Sunday afternoon at Hornet Field.With one out and the game tied at 4-4 in the bottom of the ninth, senior Everet Rincon was walked before stealing his sixth base of the season to get into scoring position. With the count at 1-2, Johnson then singled off Nevada’s Tim Schoeninger to score Rincon for the game-winning run.
The Hornets improve to 13-20 on the year and 2-4 in the Western Athletic Conference, while also taking the three-game series with the Wolf Pack, 2-1. Nevada is now 14-14 on the season and 4-2 in the WAC.
The game ended in dramatic fashion after senior left-hander Matt Campbell put his team in position to win the game. In his ninth start of the year, Campbell went 8.0 innings on the mound, allowing four runs on five hits, while recording seven strikeouts. The San Carlos, Calif., native was relieved in the ninth by right-hander Travis Kane who walked two batters. With runners in scoring position and one out, Kane was relieved by junior Cyrus Sarraf. In his 12th appearance this season, Sarraf (1-2) struck out the final two batters to set up the bottom of the ninth and earn his first win.
The game began with Nevada taking a 3-0 lead in the top of the third. With two outs, Nevada third baseman Matt Bowman recorded a two-run shot to left center. Terry Walsh’s RBI single then scored Shawn Scobee, for the Wolf Pack’s third run.
Sacramento State responded in the bottom of the inning, when junior Patrick Cummins singled to right field, scoring Rincon. Senior Buddy Morales followed up with a RBI single of his own, scoring Cummins and cutting Nevada’s lead to just one run.
In the bottom of the fifth, Rincon was walked to lead off the inning, while Johnson followed up with a single. Cummins’ sacrifice bunt advanced the runners to second and third for Morales, who recorded a RBI single to right field. After Rincon scored and Johnson advanced to third, senior Kyle Atrat came through with his team-leading 21st RBI of the season, connecting on a sacrifice fly to left field, bringing home Johnson.
The Hornets maintained their one-run lead behind Campbell until the top of the eighth, when Walsh hit a solo home run to left field. Campbell retired the final two batters of the inning, before being relieved by Kane in the ninth.
Johnson finished his day 2-for-4 and continues to lead the team with 14 multiple-hit games. Rincon was 1-for-2 with two stolen bases while being walked twice. Morales, now on a four-game hitting streak, finished 2-for-4 with two RBIs.
Nevada’s Wesley Dorsett (2-2) took the loss after pitching 4.1 innings and allowing one run on three hits. Starter Steve Taylor allowed four runs on four hits in his four innings of work.
The Hornets, now on a two-game winning streak, will next travel to Stanford on Tuesday with a 6 p.m. start. The team will then travel for a WAC three-game series with New Mexico State, beginning Friday, April 7.
