BASEBALL SPLITS WAC DOUBLEHEADER WITH NEVADA, FLORES AND MORALES HOMER

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Sacramento State picked up its first Western Athletic Conference victory of the season, with a 7-5 victory over Nevada on Saturday afternoon at Hornet Field. The Hornets and Wolf Pack split the doubleheader, with Nevada earning a 7-3 win in the first game that was resumed in the third inning after being suspended due to rain on Friday.

The Hornets are now 12-20 on the season and 1-4 in the WAC, while the Wolf Pack hold a 14-13 overall record, and drop their first league game of season, falling to 4-1.

Sacramento State tallied 13 hits in its victory on Saturday, led by senior Buddy Morales, junior Gary Johnson and sophomore David Flores.

Flores started a two-out rally in the second inning, scorching a solo home run over the left field wall. It was the third baseman’s first homer of the season and third of his career. Senior Everet Rincon and Johnson both produced singles, and advanced to third and second on a wild pitch. With runners in scoring position, junior second baseman Patrick Cummins recorded a two-run single to right field. Morales then picked up his first RBI, scoring Cummins on another hit to right field.

Trailing 4-1, Nevada regained the lead behind home runs from Terry Walsh and Leo Radkowski. In the third with two outs and a runner on first base, Walsh connected on the first pitch, homering to dead center. The Wolf Pack gained a 5-4 lead in the top of the fourth when Radkowski hit a two-run shot to left field.

Sacramento State battled back to tie the game in the fifth when senior Kyle Atrat’s sacrifice fly scored Cummins. For Atrat, it was his team-leading 20th RBI of the season. In the sixth, the Hornets took the lead when Flores led off the inning with a single before scoring on Johnson’s RBI single. Morales added his first home run of the year (second career) to center field for Sacramento State’s final run in the seventh.

Morales finished the game 3-for-4 and is now batting .291 on the season. Johnson, who leads the team with 13 multiple-hit games, was 3-for-5, while Flores finished 2-for-4. Cummins was 2-for-5 with two RBIs and two runs.

Right-hander Justin Demé picked up the win for the Hornets in relief of starter Mick Joyce. Demé (2-4), pitched 2.1 innings, holding the Wolf Pack scoreless on two hits. Right-hander Billy Sinacori earned his third save of the year, pitching the final three innings and allowing just one hit while striking out four.

Nevada’s Matt Renfree (1-2) took the loss after pitching 0.2 inning and surrendering one run on two hits. Starter Ryan Rodriguez pitched 4.2 innings, allowing five runs on nine hits.

In the first game, Nevada had a 4-0 lead entering the ninth inning, before adding three additional runs on four hits for a 7-0 lead. The Wolf Pack was led by Matt Bowman, who was 3-for-5 with a home run and David Ciarlo, who also recorded a home run while being walked twice. Jordan Opdyke was 2-for-2 and walked on two occasions.

Starter Matt Campbell (2-6) took the loss for Sacramento State after pitching 2.1 innings and allowing two runs on one hit and two walks. The Hornet pitching staff combined to walk five while hitting three batters.

The Hornets rallied for three runs in the bottom of the ninth when Brain Blauser doubled down the left field line, scoring Johnson. Morales scored on a wild pitch and Montana Dye’s RBI single scored Blauser for the Hornets’ final run.

Nevada’s Travis Sutton earned the win, allowing three runs (two earned) on five hits in 6.1 innings on the mound. Wesley Dorsett picked up the save, recording the final two outs of the game.
