FRESNO STATE SCORES GAME WINNER IN NINTH FOR 12-11 WIN OVER BASEBALL

FRESNO, Calif. – Sacramento State went toe-to-toe with Fresno State on Sunday afternoon, but the Bulldogs prevailed 12-11 when Loren Storey’s RBI-single scored Erik Wetzel for the game-winning run in the bottom of the ninth inning.

The Hornets (11-19, 0-3 WAC) were trailing Fresno State11-8 entering the final inning, when senior Kyle Atrat hit his fifth home run of the season to right field. Senior Ronnie Machado was responsible for the final two runs, producing a two-run single to right field that scored Montana Dye and Brian Conradi.

Fresno State (22-8, 3-0 WAC) maintained its 15-game winning streak, totaling 21 hits in the game. The Hornets compiled 15 hits, led by junior Gary Johnson, who was 3-for-5 with one RBI, one run and two doubles. The Sierra JC transfer now has seven doubles this season and leads the team with 12 multiple-hit games.

Sacramento State jumped out to a 5-1 lead early on, but the Bulldogs used an eight-run inning in the bottom of the third to gain their first lead of the game. Fresno State continued to build its lead, adding runs in the fifth and sixth innings.

Down 11-6 after six innings, the Hornets showed their resilience and began a comeback with two runs in the top of the seventh.

After Buddy Morales reached on an error, junior right fielder Montana Dye hit a two-run shot to left field. It was the Glendora, Calif., native’s fourth home run of the season. Dye finished the game 2-for-4 with three runs, three RBIs and one double.

Sacramento State’s Brain Blauser also hit his team-leading seventh home run of the season for Sacramento State in the sixth inning. The Elk Grove, Calif., native finished his day 2-for-5.

Conradi, now on a five-game hitting streak and batting .333 on the season, was 2-for-5 on the day and recorded his sixth double of the year, while shortstop Everet Rincon finished 2-for-5 with one run and one RBI. Machado was also 2-for-5.

Sophomore Mitch Lively (0-2) took the loss for Sacramento State after pitching 2.2 innings and surrendering one run on seven hits. Five pitchers made appearances for the Hornets, in relief of starter Travis Kane, who allowed seven runs on seven hits and four walks in 2.2 innings.

Fresno State starter Andy Underwood went 5.0 innings allowing five runs on nine hits, while striking out seven, but right-hander Jason Breckley (2-0) got the win, surrendering three runs on four hits.

At the plate, Fresno State was led by Beau Mills 4-for-5, four RBI performance. Wetzel finished 3-for-4 with two runs and two RBIs, while Steve Susdorf was 4-for-7 with one RBI and two runs.

Sacramento State will next host Cal at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, followed by a three-game WAC series with Nevada, beginning at 2 p.m. on Friday at Hornet Field.
