FRESNO, Calif., - Fresno State jumped out to an early lead and never looked back in a 13-6 win over Sacramento State on Saturday night at Beiden Field.Sacramento State falls to 11-18 on the season and 0-2 in the Western Athletic Conference, while the Bulldogs, on a 14-game winning streak, improve to 21-8 overall and 2-0 in league.
Fresno State had a 4-0 lead after three innings, before Beau Mills three-run homer to center field extended the Bulldogs’ lead to six runs in the bottom of the fifth.
Sacramento State starter Mick Joyce (5-1) suffered his first loss of the season on the mound, allowing seven runs on six hits in 4.1 innings pitched.
Sacramento State was able to narrow the gap to 7-4 with a three-run sixth inning, backed by senior Kyle Atrat’s RBI-double to left field, scoring juniors Patrick Cummins and Gary Johnson.
Fresno State added six runs to its total in the bottom of the seventh, to mount a 13-4 lead, but once again it was Atrat who produced a two-run single with the bases loaded in the top of the eighth to cut into the Bulldogs’ lead.
The Clovis, Calif., native finished the game 3-for-4 with four RBIs. In his first season with the Hornets, Atrat is now second on the team with 18 RBIs and is currently on a six-game hitting streak.
Left-hander Eddie Romero (7-1) pitched 7.0 innings in the win for the Bulldogs, allowing four runs (one earned) on seven hits, while recording four strikeouts.
Fresno State totaled 11 hits in the game, led by shortstop Christian Vitter, who was 3-for-3, walked once with two RBIs and two runs. Mills finished the game 2-for-4 with four RBIs and three runs, while center fielder Loren Storey was 2-for-3 with three runs and one RBI.
Sacramento State totaled 10 hits, led by junior right fielder Montana Dye, who was 2-for-4. Cummins finished 1-for-3 with one RBI, two runs scored, while being walked once and hit by a pitch. The Walla Walla, Wash., native, in his first year with Sacramento State, is now on a five-game hitting streak and battibng .310. Junior Brian Conradi, now hitting .327, was 1-for-4 with a RBI.
