SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Northern Colorado’s Chris Johns pitched 8.0 innings and held Sacramento State to just five hits in the Bears 12-3 win at Hornet Field on Friday afternoon.Johns (2-2) held the Hornets scoreless throughout the first six innings, and did not surrender a hit or walk until senior catcher Buddy Morales led off the sixth with a single, recording the Hornets’ first hit of the game. Johns finished the game allowing two runs on five hits while striking out three.
Sacramento State falls to 7-12 on the year, while the Bears improve to 5-10.
Northern Colorado was led by third baseman Brennan Garr, who finished the game 4-for-5 with two runs scored and one RBI. Left fielder Zach Brockman was also productive at the plate for the Bears, going 2-for-3 with two RBIs and one run.
Northern Colorado did the majority of its damage in the top of the fourth. The Hornets surrendered eight runs on five hits and two errors, while walking two batters, hitting two batters and a throwing a wild pitch.
Right-hander Travis Kane (1-3) took the loss for the Hornets, pitching 3.0 innings and allowing five runs (four earned) on three hits while striking out five. Six pitchers saw action for Sacramento State, including the second appearance for junior left-hander Mel Cuckovich, who returns after redshirting in 2005.
At the plate, Sacramento State added two runs in the seventh inning after senior outfielder Brian Conradi led off the inning with a single to right field. The Bakersfield, Calif., native scored on senior Devin Spurling’s sacrifice fly and the Hornets added their second run when Patrick Cummins’ RBI-single scored Gary Johnson.
Senior Kyle Atrat put up the Hornets third run with a solo homer to center field. it was the third of the season for the Clovis, Calif., native.
