KEIPER TALLIES FOUR HITS, ATRAT HOMERS IN BASEBALL'S LOSS AT PACIFIC

2/14/2006

STOCKTON, Calif. – Justin Baum’s three-run blast in the bottom of the second inning helped spur Pacific to a 8-3 victory over Sacramento State on Tuesday night at Banner Island Ballpark in Stockton.

The Tigers improve to 6-1 as the Hornets fall to 1-5.

Pacific put up five runs in the second inning, started by Adam Ching’s two-run single that scored John Devany and Clint Eastman.

Jason Haar (1-1) earned the victory for Pacific, pitching 5.0 innings and holding the Hornets to one unearned run on six hits. Baum added a second home run in the bottom of the eighth inning, ending his night 2-for-4 with four RBIs.

Sophomore second baseman Taylor Watanabe scored the Hornets first run of the game in the top of the fifth inning off Pat Keiper’s RBI-single to left field. Watanabe, an Aiea, Hawaii, native picked up his first hit of the game with a bunt along the third base line and advanced to second after Baum overthrew first base.

For Keiper, it was the Los Angeles native’s third RBI of the year. The second-year player out of CS Dominguez Hills went 4-for-5, recording a multiple hit outing for the second consecutive game.

The Hornets tallied nine hits and left 11 runners on base.

Pacific was led by Ching, who went 2-for-4 with three RBIs. Eastman finished the game 2-for-2 with one RBI and one run.

Sacramento State senior Kyle Atrat hit a two-run homer in the top of the ninth, his first of the year.

Hornet starter Justin Demé, in his second appearance and first start of the season, took the loss, pitching 2.0 innings and surrendering five runs on four hits.

Junior Cyrus Sarraf replaced Demé on the mound, pitching 5.0 innings, allowing two runs on four hits.

The Hornets will next play a home-away-home series against Saint Mary’s beginning at 2 p.m. on Friday at Hornet Field.
